About Mount Nebo Wilderness

Mount Nebo Wilderness encompasses over 30,000 acres in the Uinta National Forest, centered around Mount Nebo, the highest summit in the Wasatch Range at 11,928 feet. The wilderness area features steep ridges, deep canyons, and a mix of conifer forests and alpine meadows, providing habitat for species such as mule deer, elk, mountain lions, and various birds of prey. Historically, the mountain was a landmark for early Mormon settlers and is named for the biblical Mount Nebo. Visitors are attracted to this wilderness for its demanding hiking trails including the ascent to Mount Nebo’s summit, which rewards climbers with extensive views of Utah Valley and the Uintas. In addition to hiking, the area supports backpacking, fishing in mountain streams, and horseback riding. Seasonal wildflowers and fall color draws naturalists and photographers alike. The wilderness designation protects the area from motorized access, preserving the primitive character for solitude and wildlife habitat. With easy access from nearby towns, Mount Nebo Wilderness serves both day visitors and backcountry adventurers seeking high-elevation experiences close to Utah’s populated areas.
